National Winners Celebrate
What does it feel like to win seven national Event Awards?Humbling, incredulous, heart warming and amazing. In mid-June I attended the Meetings & Events Australia Conference in the Hunter Valley. It was two days of learning topped off by the annual MEA Event Industry Awards, recognising excellence in event management in 2023.

Refreshed and robust
There is nothing more satisfying than as a business owner returning refreshed from summer leave to a busy office where the hard work of the previous year is already paying dividends. I found this to be the case after my time away with family and friends, to find the efforts my ICMSA family put in just prior to Christmas now bearing fruit across our four offices.

Government re-awakening to the benefits of business events through funding
Meetings and events are once again booming in Australia. Everybody, it appears, wants to reconnect and make up for lost time. Recognising this, and hopeful of securing their own piece of the pie, convention bureaux with government funding, are offering financial support for organisations to hold their event in their city, state or territory.

Many people have surmised over the past two years that 2020 will be the year that will be remembered in the future because of the global pandemic. If that is true then 2022 could be remembered as the year when we began a new era of reconnection and renewal.

Border reopening signals fresh start for events
Nobody expected the reopening of Australia’s international borders last month to immediately result in an influx of delegates at upcoming meetings. But the proof is in the pudding and, after a two year hiatus, we are seeing above expectation registration rates, with a 50% ratio of in-person to virtual delegates for meetings we are running in hybrid format between April and June of this year.

Mastering disruptive innovation
Clarity of purpose can sometimes happen at the oddest times. Here I was, a few weeks ago, searching for the phone number of a man I had used previously to rehome possums that had found a comfortable place to nest in my roof, and had done so again, when I came across a jotting on a piece of paper by my late husband and past owner of ICMS Australasia, Bryan Holliday.

Future Shining Stars
We as a nation will soon be emerging from a lockdown that in 2021 has been longer and some may say, more challenging than that imposed in 2020. With vaccination rates increasing and the Federal Government’s pathway for a return of travel and gatherings, the signs are all positive that 2022 will be a watershed year for business events.

Australians shouldn’t need an incentive to have COVID-19 vaccinations but it seems likely we’re heading down that path if we don’t up our game over the coming months.

Onwards and Upwards
Since June 2020 ICMSA has delivered seven virtual meetings for its clients with over 4,000 delegates attending. The good news is that all of these have been monetised through the support of sponsors, with six of them returning a profit for the owners.

As I write this I’m acutely aware of the way the virus shapes our lives at the moment. As we head into the home run of Christmas and celebrations I’m thinking of those families separated and those that adapt as well as they can.

Green and Growing
COVID-19 disruption continues globally. What to do when there seems you can do nothing? Create opportunities and forge ahead with new plans. Regional NSW, who themselves are still struggling after the summer of bushfires, offered the ideal setting for the bi-annual Strategic Meeting of senior ICMSA minds.

Raising the Curtain
Monday 1 June marks the official return to work for the ICMSA team in offices across Australia. A transition period has been implemented with each office now occupied in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with the goal of working towards all staff being back on deck by the end of June.
