The ICMSA-managed Oceania Tobacco Control Conference (OTCC 2024) on the Gold Coast highlighted First Nations across the entire event, with the priority goal of assisting better health outcomes for Indigenous people in Australia and the Oceania region.
ICMSA assisted in heightening Indigenous participation and focus with the Local Organising Committee through appointment of an Aboriginal Cultural Conference Partner and creation of a program that included First Nations-specific content.
This included a pre-conference workshop with content specifically designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Māori, Pacific and Indigenous delegates who were working in tobacco control and smoking cessation.
OTCC 2024 also partnered with First Nations artist and designer Lisa Sorbie Martin, who created a remarkable art piece titled Woven Together. It underscored the conference themes of sharing knowledge, experiences and ideas to build stronger teams in the fight against cancer. During the conference, Lisa created an art piece that brought delegates together to collaborate on a shared project.
